Morecambe Bay

Morecambe Bay is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and an internationally important area for wildlife, particularly for its over-wintering and passage for populations of wading birds and wildfowl. The bay’s diverse habitats including salt marshes and intertidal mudflats support a wide array of species. It’s also home to rare and declining flora and fauna making it a crucial site for conservation.

Wherever you go there are areas of great beauty with a rich variety of wildlife (including deer, badgers, squirrels, rare butterflies, song birds) all within walking distance.

Grange-over-Sands and Flookburgh

Flookburgh has great amenities for a small village including a chemist, convenience store, post office, fish and chip/Chinese, hairdressers and sandwich shop, not forgetting Brooks Supplies for all your hardware needs and gardening essentials. A visit is not complete without a stop in their café for homemade cakes and light lunches.

The train station Cark-in-Cartmel is just half a mile walk which has excellent links to other local towns and major destinations and cities, we are also fortunate to have a good supply of trusted reliable taxi drivers on hand to serve the area.

Walney nature reserve

Walney is an 11 mile long island and as such boasts a diverse range of beaches to enjoy or explore. The beaches at West Shore and North Walney offer wide expanses of sand at low tide and join North Walney Nature Reserve via a series of sandy dunes. They offer a great location for family play, exploring nature or enjoying one of the best sunsets in the UK.

Earnse Bay beach offers panoramic views across the Irish Sea to the Isle of Man and the Lake District mountains which silhouette against the wind turbines located in one of the biggest offshore windfarms in the world. Earnse Bay is home to the North West Kite surfing school and is popular for watersports, walking and sunbathing during the summer months. The coastal paths are ideal for family walks or cycling and Biggar Bank has a children’s playground near the Round House Hub & Café which serves drinks and refreshments throughout the day.

Cartmel

Cartmel Village is brimming with charm and rich history, there are countless things to do in Cartmel Village. Take a leisurely stroll through the picturesque streets lined with quaint shops, where you can discover unique local handmade crafts and galleries indulge in local delicacies. A visit to Cartmel would be incomplete without sampling the famous Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding, a sweet treat that is a must-try for anyone with a fondness for desserts. While on the topic of food Cartmel is home to the famous Michelin star restaurants L’Enclume and Rogan & Co.

Historic Holker Hall, stunning Victorian home to the Cavendish Family, house, gardens and café are open for visitors to enjoy.

Humphry Head is a limestone outcrop situated south of the village of Allithwaite in Cumbria, England. It is whale-back-shaped and accessible for walkers, giving views over Morecambe Bay to Lancaster, Morecambe, Heysham and over the Leven estuary to Ulverston.

The Morecambe Bay sands are renowned for their quick sands and fast flowing tides. Crossing the sands has always been dangerous. The Guide over Sands Trust is a charity which provides two guides, to offer safe passage across both the Kent and Leven Estuaries, Arnside to Grange and Ulverston to Chapel Island.
